About Us
Many others have written similar books. But this one is the culmination of years of study by Dr. Atkins, through which he eventually concluded that a balanced diet consisting of protein, fats, and low-glycemic whole grains fruit and nuts, are the main fare of a healthy person. Dr. Atkins is still known largely for his extreme weight loss diet, but this book reflects a healthy balanced diet. We at Betterway Press believe that a balanced diet is just as effective for weight loss as it is for weight maintenance, if combined with sober portion control and a willingness to stop eating when not hungry.
This is the last of the Atkins books, as Dr. Atkins, a cardiologist, recently passed away due to an accident. Although he wrote other books, and there are books by other authors about the low-carbohydrate diet, this is the one which leads the reader to conclude that portion control and balance are necessary for permanent thinness, and that carbohydrates are not evil. What Atkins suggests in this book as a maintenance diet really looks more like the "Zone Diet" (described on this site) than what people think of traditionally as a low-carbohydrate diet.
What Atkins calls the "induction" phase of the low-carbohydrate diet is unnecessary and can lead some dieters into a diet mentality instead of a healthy eating and hunger-satiety mind-set. Many Atkins followers wrongly conclude that they can "eat more food" or "eat as much as they want." Eventually they find, to their dismay, that they need to un-learn what they've learned, usually when they begin out of desperation to incorporate carbohydrates into their diet. We at Betterway Press think it is better to learn to control portion size right away and to follow what your body craves than it is to force on yourself a carbohydrate-free regimen that your body will eventually reject. Nevertheless, you can use this book to help you lose weight by embracing the maintenance diet along with portion control. Eating a good balance of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, all in small amounts, and with close attention to your body's cues, will naturally and easily lead your body to its ideal weight.
