About Us
This book is an eye-opener for anyone interested in the power of the rational mind to direct and supplant feelings and irrational beliefs. Edelstein and Steele teach you how to become aware enough of what you're thinking so that, at will, you can replace your ineffective and irrational thoughts with a more effective belief, thus leading you to a more successful, peaceful and satisfying life. This is a great book to read while you're on the path to weight loss or trying to make any other major change in your life.
These authors refer to a certain kind of self-talk that we all have. They call it "musts." This plan must work. My children must listen. My business must not fail. These musts are a form of irrational thinking, and they lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and lowered expectations so that we won't be disappointed. Edelstein and Steele teach their readers that consciously replacing musts with nice-to-haves will blow the roof off of your former self-imposed constraints. You will become empowered to take risks and accept failure.
This form of therapy, called "cognitive therapy", parts ways with traditional therapy in at least three ways. First, it discards the notion that you have to delve into your past in order to make any real change in your life. Second, you can do it yourself. You will not need to pay for expensive therapy. Third, it subscribes to the belief that once you are aware of your mysterious feelings, they will become demystified, and you will become empowered to rise above them or use them as you wish, rather than be a slave to them. Thus, your feelings become tools instead of masters of your choices.
